Jacksonville Real EstateJacksonville at a Glance

Do you need proof that Jacksonville is a great place to live? Money Magazine consistently rates Jacksonville as one of its “Top 10 Places To Live.” Entrepreneur magazine has ranked the city as second in its “Best Big Cities For Small Business,” and Expansion Management Magazine frequently touts Jacksonville in the top ten for its hottest cities in America for business relocation.

Jacksonville is located on the banks of the St. Johns River in the First Coast region of Northeast Florida. It is the county seat of Duval County and it has the highest population in the state. You won’t soon forget the beauty of Downtown Jacksonville’s skyline. As of 1990, The Bank of America building bears the distinction of being the tallest.

Because it shares a consolidated government with Duval County, Jacksonville is the largest city (on the basis of land area, that is) in the contiguous United States. It ranks as number 12 worldwide.

In 2006, estimates placed the population of Jacksonville proper at 831,338. Its metropolitan population totals over 1.3 million people!

A Little History of Jacksonville

Did you know that Jacksonville was once the “ Hollywood of the South?” During the silent film era, more than 300 movies were made here. Where Metropolitan Park now sits there was once a small studio that was the “Metro” in Metro-Goldwyn Mayer (MGM). By 1916 there were more than 30 studios here. Comedian Oliver Hardy, who started as a ticket taker, was probably the city’s most famous film star at the time. The first Technicolor film, called “The Gulf Between,” was filmed here.

Ray Charles was born in Jacksonville. So was Charles E. Merrill, co-founder of Merrill-Lynch.

Although the U.S. Navy had a minor presence in Jacksonville, it was not until 1940 that the Navy became a major employer as well as an economic force in the area.

The National Football League awarded a franchise to Jacksonville in 1994. The Jaguars began to play in 1995 in Alltel Stadium, and Jacksonville was the proud host of Super Bowl XXXIX in 2005.
